Compost barn for inspiration and use

A compost barn is a multifunctional building for both animals, plants and human beings too. This project covers rearing of cows and cultivation of tomato, squash and pumpkins.

The project follows start and praxis in a combined stable and greenhouse; during wintertime housing cattle while during summertime housing tomato-, squash- and pumpkin plants. The existing compost barn is built at Gran Nordre Farm close to Snåsa.

The connection between production of plants and livestock is highlighted with focus on plant nutrition and quality of compost.

A description and guidance will be made available for compost barns. It might be relevant due to European revision of organic regulation which prescribes cultivation in contact with living soil, surface and rock ground. Furthermore, it prescribes crop rotation suitable for greenhouse.

Target groups are greenhouse gardeners and peasants with livestock.

Main goal is to integrate production of plants and animals in harmonized, organic way.
