Clover Fatigue – Occurrence and Control

Nematodes and fungi can cause clover fatigue. Knowledge about the occurrence of this problem in Norway is scant. The project includes a survey of the occurrence of clover fatigue and the dissemination of knowledge about its prevention and control.

Knowledge about the occurrence of clover fatigue in Norway is scant. Increased use of clover in leys and other crops, combined with a warmer climate, may lead to a spread of the harmful organisms that cause clover fatigue. The project aims to obtain more knowledge about clover fatigue and propose measures for its prevention and control. The study will be relevant for both organic and conventional production. Soil and clover samples from organic farms in different parts of Norway are being analysed for nematodes and fungi. Various groups of plant-pathogenic nematodes were detected on several farms, some in large numbers. The project’s literature review surveys the situation in neighbouring countries in terms of the organisms’ occurrence, symptoms and possible control measures. This also includes contact with scientists and advisers in the neighbouring countries. The project’s target groups are agricultural advisers, farmers and scientists. Results will be communicated orally and in writing, both in Norway and abroad.
